What Size Room Do I Need for a Golf Simulator?

One of the most common questions we get at Birdie Builds is:“What size room do I need for a golf simulator?”
The good news is that golf simulators can fit into more spaces than most people think. We’ve designed and installed simulators in garages, bonus rooms, offices, basements, movie theaters, and custom sheds throughout Washington. The key is understanding how ceiling height, width, and depth all work together to create the best experience possible.

Ceiling Height: The Most Important Factor
Ceiling height is usually the biggest concern when planning a golf simulator build.
We’ve completed simulator installations in rooms with ceilings as low as 8 feet, but the most important test is simple:
If you can comfortably swing a driver without your follow-through hitting the ceiling, you likely have enough height for a simulator.
Every golfer’s swing is different. Taller players and steeper swings may require additional clearance, while others can comfortably play in tighter spaces.
For most golfers, we typically recommend:
8’ minimum ceiling height
9’–10’ preferred ceiling height for the best overall experience
Higher ceilings create a more open feel, allow for more comfortable swings, and give greater flexibility for lighting, projectors, and overhead launch monitors.
Room Width: Righties, Lefties, and Comfortable Swing Space
Width is another major factor when designing a simulator room.
At Birdie Builds, the smallest width we typically recommend is:
8 feet wide for a single-handed golfer setup
For rooms that need to accommodate both right-handed and left-handed golfers, we’ve successfully built simulators in spaces as narrow as:
12 feet wide
In tighter spaces, we often use technologies like a SimRail system, which allows overhead launch monitors to automatically shift side-to-side depending on whether a right-handed or left-handed golfer is hitting.
Launch monitor selection also plays a big role in room flexibility.
Some launch monitors offer:
2-foot hitting zones, which provide more flexibility in tighter rooms
Others only provide a 1-foot hitting zone, which can make righty/lefty setups more challenging
Choosing the right technology for your space is one of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced simulator design company.
Room Depth: More Important Than Most People Realize
Depth is critical for both safety and comfort.
In most golf simulator builds:
The impact screen sits about 12 inches off the back wall
Golfers hit from approximately 7–10 feet away from the screen
When you factor in:
Swing clearance
A hitting mat
Comfortable movement behind the golfer
You typically want at least:
13 feet of room depth for a comfortable setup
That said, bigger is always better.
Additional depth allows you to:
Add seating
Create a lounge atmosphere
Improve traffic flow
Make the room more enjoyable for family and guests
Create a more immersive simulator experience
Enclosure vs Custom Golf Simulator Build
The layout of your room will also determine whether an enclosure or a custom-built simulator makes the most sense.
Enclosures
Enclosures are often ideal for:
Garages
Rooms with odd angles
Multi-use spaces
Tight layouts
They provide flexibility and can often be custom-ordered down to the inch.
Custom-Built Golf Simulators
Custom builds are typically best for:
Bonus rooms
Offices
Movie theaters
Dedicated simulator rooms
Luxury golf sheds
Custom designs allow the simulator to blend seamlessly into the room with integrated padding, lighting, trim work, flooring transitions, and hidden technology for a premium finish.
Bigger Is Always Better
While we can build golf simulators into surprisingly compact spaces, larger rooms almost always create a better experience.
More space means:
More comfort
Better aesthetics
Easier righty/lefty play
Additional seating and entertainment space
Better projector and launch monitor flexibility
Every room is different, which is why we always recommend designing the simulator around the golfer, the room dimensions, and the overall experience you want to create.
